It’s safe to say that Abel Tesfaye, the man behind The Weeknd, has had a good year. Earlier this month the RnB wonder released Trilogy, his debut album which features remastered tracks from all three of his previous mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence.
The Weeknd began to gain fame around March 2011 with help from rapper Drake, who took an interest in his music and publicised some of Tesfaye’s work via his Twitter account. It was not long after this that thousands were appreciating his work, and he was soon being featured in magazines such as Rolling Stone and MTV News.
The release of Trilogy is bound to be a success, after House of Balloons was named the #1 album of 2011 by Complex magazine, beating albums from Drake, Jay-Z and Kanye West to the top spot.
The singer puts a dark twist on the stereotypical style for RnB music, featuring slow, melodic beats and choosing to write deeper and more emotional lyrics covering love, lust and indulgence. For example, in one of his most popular songs The Zone he sings “I’ll be making love to her through you / So let me keep my eyes closed”. It is these dark lyrics paired with such smooth and slow music that has continued to make The Weeknd such a success. He has recently signed to Universal Republic Records, and also owns the label XO.
As a celebration for the release of Trilogy, The Weeknd is planning a show at a secret location in London on Sunday night (November 25). Fans can apply to win tickets via The Weeknd’s official website and will be informed by 9pm this evening if they are successful.
