Earlier this year we thoroughly enjoyed reviewing BADBADNOTGOOD’s album BBNG2, which is why we’re very excited that the group have announced the release of their new full-length, Sour Soul, due to be released February 17th 2015 through Lex Records.
The trio are a group of musicians which we have been thoroughly impressed by, as they are a kind of modern jazz/hip hop group, which is a bit different to listen to. As we wrote in our review of their last album, they’re something of pioneers in this contemporary take on jazz, which always makes listening to their material interesting to say the least.
What is clear though, is that we’re not the only people that are enjoying the BADBADNOTGOOD experience, as Sour Soul will feature the renowned rapper Ghostface Killah on every track. That’s right – every single track.
The news doesn’t even stop there though; previously Danny Brown was also featured on a track which was released earlier this year titled Six Degrees, taken from the upcoming album. Aside from Ghostface Killah and Danny Brown, Elzhi will also appear on the album, with other artists being announced over the next few weeks.
Sour Soul is apparently inspired by 1960’s and 70’s music and the production techniques that were in use around those decades, with the group also placing an emphasis on the use of live instrumentation rather than sampling.
Putting all of these pieces together it seems like Sour Soul is going be an absolutely huge release for many different listeners. With live instrumentation, numerous quality acts being involved and BADBADNOTGOOD’S ambitious sound, it could be a very significant album of 2015.
