Phil Fish, creator of Fez.
Fez 2 has been cancelled, Polytron announced via their Twitter account yesterday afternoon.
The sequel to the widely acclaimed indie platformer was announced only last month during E3 and its early demise appears to be linked with a row between its creator Phil Fish and Gametrailers’ Marcus ‘Annoyed Gamer’ Beer.
Following a heated argument between the two on Twitter, Fish announced that he wanted to leave the games industry. He said via Twitter:
“i f****** hate this industry.”
“there’s not a day goes by i don’t fantasize about leaving it. but that would only make you happy, right?”
And later on:
“im done. FEZ II is cancelled. goodbye.”
“to be clear, im not cancelling FEZ II because some boorish f*** said something stupid, im doing it to get out of games.”
“and im getting out of games because i choose not to put up with this abuse anymore.”
Marcus Beer, also known as ‘Annoyed Gamer’
The announcement was then confirmed on Polytron’s Twitter page, stating:
“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that FEZ II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologize for the disappointment”
Another statement was made on Polytron’s website, I assume written by Fish, it reads:
“FEZ II is cancelled.
i am done.
i take the money and i run.
this is as much as i can stomach.
this is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign.
Sad news for gamers. Phil Fish is clearly a talented games developer, Fez is a testament to that. If he does leave the industry, I hope he is happier with whatever it is he ends up doing.
