An Interview with King The Kid

We spoke to King The Kid, a pop-rock band from Oregon. The three-piece have recently released their first full-length album Start Something and have come off their summer tour dates.

HUNOW: You’ve been on 2 tours this year, the first was March 1st – April 21st and the second was fair recent July 12th – August 25th. How did you find both tours?

KTK: Being an independent band, we know first hand that touring can be a tough field to break into. Our first tour was a self-booked “Living Room Style” tour where we played in the homes of fans every night. The best advice we can give is to be creative, work hard, and the opportunities will come! Also, you can always get better; don’t settle, whether it’s songwriting, live performance, or any other thing.

HUNOW: While on tour what 3 things could you not survive without?

KTK:

- A package of water bottles in the van

- Our snack box

- The love of the fans

HUNOW: When you are on tour what do you like to do on your days off and how do you unwind?

KTK: A day-off is very seldom because we typically have to drive BUT if we do have time off we try do random fun things like go to a skatepark or a driving-range!

HUNOW: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

KTK: Band bubble baths.

HUNOW: You have an album out called Start Something, how well has it been received by the fans, better than expected?

KTK: We launched the band December 15th of 2012 and the album dropped 5 days later. 2013 has been an incredible year and the tours have been so much fun! Nothing is more fulfilling than hearing the fans sing along to the songs we wrote.

HUNOW: Have you had any embarrassing moments while on stage?

KTK: If you ever go to a King The Kid show you will notice that we’re not people that get embarrassed easily. We love to just have fun and joke around on stage.

HUNOW: Where did the band name come from? How did you settle on King The Kid?

KTK: King The Kid was founded on independence and staying true to who you are. The name represents empowering yourself.

HUNOW: When writing the album Start Something what inspirations did you draw on to come up with the lyrics?

KTK: Our songs range from topics of love, angst, heartbreak, party songs and more! Usually what the music sounds like can invoke an emotion and inspire lyrics.

HUNOW: You all seem quite young, how long have you been making music?

KTK: Music has always been a huge part of our lives since we were all kids. We’re all in our early 20s now.

HUNOW: What are King The Kid’s top five artists to listen to at the moment?

KTK:

- Marianas Trench

- Incubus

- Led Zeppelin

- Five Finger Death Punch

- The Cheetah Girls

HUNOW: For the UK readers of HOLDUPNOW, are there any plans to tour the UK anytime soon?

KTK: As of right now we don’t have any immediate plans to come overseas but it is a dream all of us share. Maybe one of the HOLDUPNOW readers can bring an opportunity our way!
